Europe: Green plants are popular for Mother’s Day

For many years, green plants have been a fashionable interior item, and with the right pot, they also make a great gift for Mother’s Day. Danish nursery LUNDAGER grows primarily green plants and succulents and has seen a 20% increase in demand compared to last year. They deliver their products all over Europe, and for Mother’s Day their biggest markets are Denmark, Germany, Sweden and France.

Out of the crisis

According to Olga Lundager, owner of LUNDAGER, the increased demand is due to both the general popularity of green plants and the fact that many European countries have emerged from the crisis. “Compared to last year, the demand for our plants and Mother’s Day concepts is about 20% higher. The countries we export to seem to be out of the crisis. Consumers are optimistic and buying again.”

Mother's Day products

Green plants seem to be very popular this Mother’s Day. “We sell a lot of green plants for decorations and our new Mother’s Day concepts – green plants or succulents in heart-shaped magnetic pots – are also doing well.” These pots, along with the production of around 450 finished plants, form an important part of their business. They produce around 200 different designs of ceramic and magnetic pots. “Every year we try to develop new designs to suit the different markets we serve.”

Olga Lundager presents the new anthurium plants at IPM Essen 2017 in Germany.

They are also actively working on developing new plant varieties. In collaboration with several breeders, they developed a new mini-anthurium, which they introduced in 2016. “In Europe, we now have the exclusive rights to produce this plant in 6 and 7 cm pots,” says Lundager. Later that year, they added four new colors in a 6 cm pot, which also seem to be popular for Mother’s Day.

Mother's Day celebrations spread out

LUNDAGER starts sending out their products about two weeks before the holiday. Right now they are busy shipping products for Mother’s Day in Denmark and Germany, which is celebrated on May 14. Then they will start shipping to Sweden and France, where Mother’s Day is celebrated on Sunday, May 28. “It’s quite convenient for us that these holidays are spread out. That way we can take more orders and ensure sufficient supply.”
